Filling the incubator 6-3-2011 Join me for my 1st attempt?

Went into lockdown this morning. There are three peafowl eggs in there that are younger than the chicken eggs, so I'm turning them using a bamboo skewer poked through a ventilation hole. The incubator temperatures have been all over the board lately, so we'll see if anything hatches on schedule, or if we get another super-delayed, staggered hatch. At least all but three of the eggs looked good on candling two nights ago!

Got two bators going right now. All eggs went lock down last night. Day 21 Thursday. This is my second time to hatch. Our weather like most has been terrible this spring for hatching. Hot one day cold the next and humidity up and down. Kind of tough to get good hatch rates. Will be posting pictures on web site as the hatching starts if any wants to take a look. I wish you all the best of luck with your little fuzzy butts. lol

Had a heck of a storm roll through here last night. I saw it coming on weather radar and got myself (and more importantly, my incubator) ready for a power outage...just in case.

I have one of those portable battery things you can jump start a car with, and a cheap inverter which I use to run fans for my dogs when I'm out training in the heat. I got it set up next to the bator so I could just plug it in if needed. I also got out two long extension cords that I could run out to my RV, which has a generator, if the battery thing didn't work.

Made sure I had flashlights ready with good batteries.

Then I stayed up so that I wouldn't sleep through it if the power did go out! I was not going to lose these eggs to a power outage on day 18 come heck or high water!

Of course, since I was prepared, it was all for naught and while it was a bad storm that took down some trees and part of the roof off my patio, the power stayed on. I'm sure if I hadn't been prepared, and had slept through everything, the power would have been out all night.

Yeah, we had a really nasty storm, too. Took out some trees on our place. Thankfully we never lost power. My little guys are on day 20, so hopefully, any time now we could be seeing some pips.

Checked this morning and have three fuzz butts one cochin cross and two buff orpingtons one other egg has pipped and the others still look fine no explosions day 21 starts today at 4 so we will have to wait and see what happens. I think they started incubating in the carten before I put them in due to the higher temps of summer. Keep your fingers crossed for the other 6 I will post pictures when I am home

Stitch,
If you decide to keep hatching, those battery deals are well worth it. You can buy them at WalMart or Target for anywhere from $25 to $50. Then the inverter was $9.99, I think. It's easy to set up...and a side benefit is it's great to keep it in your trunk in case you ever need to jumpstart your car! Most of them also have a USB port so you can recharge cell phones, etc. They're great for emergencies of almost any kind. I can't tell you how often I've used mine for a variety of things including powering electric tools (away from the house where there is not electricity) to running a boombox on the beach at a lake party!

ETA: Another funny use is I've used it to power a crockpot on the road when I needed to keep a potluck dish hot on my way to a party that was 2 hours away.

I don't know how long it would run an incubator, but I know when I'm at a weekend of dog training it runs 1 or 2 small fans for 2 days without dying.

Lockdown is tonight and I'm nervous. My previous attempt in my new Brinsea failed completely. The temp gauge was incorrect and while it said it was at 99.6 degrees, it was really at 96.1 degrees. One tried to hatch on day 24 or so but died in the shell. I think she got shrink-wrapped but I'm not sure. She was zipping but the shell wasn't breaking away, just cracking.
I'm scared because I've never hatched in a forced air incubator so I am iffy, I feel like the fan just dries 'em out.
I won't be home tomorrow or most of Thursday, due date is Friday. My parents will be home and I'll have them check on things every once in a while, but I'll be a nervous wreck the whole time I'm gone.
I'm planning on bumping up humidity to 70% (sound ok?) at 9:00 tonight and taking them off the turner. Should I candle and take out the no-goers to make room? Are you supposed to only candle with an LED flashlight? If so I'll need to go get one.
