Final Results - Jumbo Cornish Cross from McMurray Hatchery

There are a number of folks trying to breed a bird that grows big, and that fast, with some success. My buddy and fellow BYC Okie Al6517 is on a fourth generation using the genetics from the Cornish X. Jeff Brunty is working on a similar project.

But you are correct, CX will not breed true.

Are you trying to do dehybridization, like what can be done to try to breed a stable open-pollinated variety of version of a hybrid vegetable?

"The rich fat from the birds rendered well in my crockpot. I have about 4 cups that I have frozen in 1/4 cup portions to be used in savory pie crusts."

How do you render the fat for storage??

Looking at doing a few capons myself. Mentioned that to my mom and she got all excited, she's 76. Have access to all of the tools in my kit, and now I have a "looper".

What basis did you use for identifying the young cockrels? I've heard mention of short tail feathers on chicks. Also, what age cut-off do you use for caponizing?

Thanks.

No, I'm not smart enough for that sort of stuff. You would need to talk to the above referenced folks.

I also did a dozen of these Jumbo CornishX from mcmurray in 2008. Best thing I ever did. Pigs with feathers tho. I butchered mine at 8-and 10 weeks and they were huge in my opinion for a chicken prob 8 or so lbs a peice. big enuff for me. I processed them myself and didnt keep them along time so it didnt cost me near enuff. I also raised them in spring in florida so nearly no expense on electricity. After 3 weeks I started suplimenting their food with cracked corn and they were on fresh grass every day each week i added more corn.

i hello i just got a egg incubator for my birthday and i was wondering what cross of chicken makes a jumbo cornish cross
, thanks

Jake,
The crosses are a trade secret, secret formula or whatever you want to call it. There are probably more than one formula to make these but they wouldn't want the general public to be able to duplicate them.

Thanks everyone for resurrecting this thread.

Right now I use a plucker made of PVC pipe endcap with 'fingers' made of rubber bungee cords. It fits onto my drill and can pluck a bird in about 2 minutes. a little more labor intensive than a Whizang, but at 7.00 to make, well worth it.

Would you be willing to share this design with us? sounds like something I would like to make.

Thanks.
