My dark brown layer mutts (penedesenca x welsummer x maran) finally laid their first egg! They are 8months old now.

They are very nice chickens and it seems the lady I got them from has crossed them so many times they breed pretty true. The only downside seems to be their slow maturity. They are also quite heavy birds. I can't attest to laying ability, broodiness, etc.. yet but they lay nice dark eggs and rather large ones. Unfortunately the reason I can tell you they are heavy birds is because I just had to haul 2 dead ones up to the pile of dead chickens collecting in my yard until the police came to take my report. Some idiot's loose dog nearly wiped out my flock in less than an hour. My bantam flock would have been devastated and I probably would have had to start over if it wasn't for the 2 dozen chicks I had planned to sell and haven't yet. All my dark layers except the roo (who hid in the coop) were dead or missing. After much searching I recovered 3 injured ones and 1 live. 2 of the injured died and I was getting worried I'd only have 1 hen but another showed up just before dark. I'm hoping the other 2 are tucked away somewhere safe and will come home tomorrow.

Here are some of the hens:

Is it just me or does everyone else notice the lack of enthusiasm in non-chicken owning folks about eggs. I get so tickled over the almost pink color of some of my eggs or the size and my friends just think I'm goofy.
