Finally!! I’ve found and bought a Cochin bantam hen!! I’ve been needing one for a while now, to use as a broody hen for my modern eggs, but I couldn’t find one I liked. At any sale I went to , They all were either too big, too unhealthy/weird looking, or just plain crazy/wild acting when I went to handle them. NOT what I wanted. But finally, today, a man was selling a pen full of 2 month old bantams, and one single year old hen. And she Gorgeous! She kinda spooked a bit when I went to pick her up, but no crazy screaming, which was a somewhat good sign. And you couldn’t beat her $5 price! So, guess who came home with me? She calmed down enough for me to find she is VERY calm and tame, and curious. I’m absolutely in love with her, and very happy to have found her, even if she wasn’t the exact color I wanted.

The only problem...I can’t find a name for her! I had 3 in mind, but liked them all equally, so what do you guys think? I have Lana, Muriel, and Iris. Vote up above, or add your own!! This sweet gal deserves an amazing name.

Looks like I’m naming her Iris! She’s not very happy about being on day 4 of 7 in confinement, but she’s made friends with her pen neighbor Ripley!
She sits on the corner of her little perch and sticks her beak through the wire, and stares at him. Quite the funny sight to see a short stubby Cochin stretching up that much!

Update!
She laid me an egg! I’m very happy, I’m pretty sure she was broody before I bought her, as every time she gets a treat, she calls for babies. Hopefully she’ll be willing to go broody again in a month or two!:gig
She is currently still penned up, had some snot and sickness smell to her beak on Wednesday, it’s mostly gone again, but she’s in confinement until next Wednesday, just to be sure. She did get a little break today, I let her out when no one else was and stuck her in an abandoned pen outside that hasn’t (and won’t be) used for a while, where she had some grass, and happily dusted herself!

I noticed she had very long toenails, so I clipped them with dog/cat nail clippers, as I do with all my chickens. I noticed one toe had a nail that was curved the opposite way, instead of down, it curved up, looking almost like it grew in upside down. It’s hard to tell in any pictures, so I won’t post any. But any ideas as to why it’s like this? Maybe it’s a Cochin thing...my Grandma used to have one with a bent toenail...?:idunno
