Finally built a page for my Playskool Coop!

Hen_House_Rocks! :

Thanks! Even the sign was recycled. It used to say "Garden of Weedin" I just painted over it. I will only have two pullets. I have eight right now- six will be butchered when they reach fryer size at the end of Oct. Think I can get by with one nest box?

You might want to keep more than 2 pullets. Seriously, if something happens to 1 and you only have 1 left, you're going to have a very unhappy bird. Can't you keep 3 or 4, just to be safe?

Edited to add... I have 12 girls sharing 4 nest boxes and no problems.

I don't know. The coop is only 4 foot wide by 3.5 foot deep. I think three would be the absolute most. What do you all think?

What breed are your chickens? I had 4 that slept in a large dog house last year, two standards and two bantams. All they did was sleep in the coop though. Maybe you could keep 3 comfortably. I had two Cornish Rocks that I kept in a separate run from my layers and one died on Monday. I hadn't thought about that happening. Fortunately, I was able to put the other CR in a tractor in the run with the layers, so she isn't all alone, even though she is separated from them. Hopefully someone with more experience will be able to tell you about that space issue. Best wishes with your cute coop!

They are Barred Rock's. I think you are right, I could probably squeeze in a third. Maybee one of them will turn out to be a roo and I can have babiee?!

I'm very impressed with your skills! It is beautiful and so creative. I have a coop about your size and have 5 standard pullets. There is plenty of space for them. They only sleep in it though. Then they come out to their attached run. I would definitely keep a few more, say 3 to 5.

Wow! That is a fantastic coop. I am really impressed and wish I could do something like that too. Unfortunately I am not at all handy and dh isn't much better.

I am going to be making a coop out of one of those too!! There was one left behind from the people that lived here before us. Too funny! Great job!

Yes, if you're only keeping a few chickens, one nestbox will be enough. I saw your run full of babies and assumed that was your flock. I think the standard rule of thumb is 1 nestbox for up to 4 hens. I agree with Robin'sBrood and would definitely keep at least 3 hens in case something happens to one of them (it's hard trying to introduce a new hen to another). You might want to try keeping 4 and if they are happy enough, then great. If they seem overcrowded you can take out your least favorite of the 4.
