Thanks everyone! I think I will take your suggestions and keep 4 or 5 and see how it goes. They do free range around our large fenced yard in the evenings (from about 5:30 p.m. till dark) and all day on Saturday and Sunday. So I think you may be right. They have enough room to get away from each other when they are cooped up. They have the coop, the bottom of the coop, the run, and two levels of roosts in the run. So I think that helps keep conflict to a minimum.
The floor of the bottom story of the coop and run are covered with hardware cloth and have a layer of pine shavings on top. I'm going to give the deep litter method a try this winter. I started using D.E. last week and am impressed with the results. I will definitely keep using! No more chicken smell!
