Hello BYC! - after lurking the site and steadily weakening under pressure from 3 kids (all girls, 12yo, 12yo, & 19yo) we've got 3 Austrolorpes cruising our suburban backyard. Along with an amazing number of wild birds (we're in some sort of perfect habitat crossroads it seems), 3 dogs 2 cats + squirrels and chipmunks - the yard is a riot of activity. we're in Richmond, VA.
Look forward to meeting lots of folks here, getting tips and help, and getting to the point where we can offer some of our own!

All best,

Welcome to BYC Beau, hope you will enjoy it as much as we do. The problem with all the wild birds is they may bring disease, mites, lice to your chickens.
Good to know - let the problem solving begin. I think we're looking at giving them a run + coop about 65 feet away from the feeder activity. Is that a distance that would isolate the yardbirds somewhat from the wildbirds?

I hope so. Is the fencing on your run tight(small enough openings) so the wild birds cannot get inside? Maybe someone else has better ideas of keeping them out. A run cover would also help and keep raptors away from your birds.

Working on it this weekend, so this is good info. Hawks and Owls abound, but our neighbors only have crisscrossed twine to protect against that, and have been successful with their chickens for several years. Sounds like we should do more than that to keep occasional wild birds out?
