finally finished with coop? Woopeeeeee!

My DH finally finished the coop and run last night, it's been 2 weeks of hard work, NOW to the big question is, what kind of chickens to get, what kind of feed. HELP ME PLEASE
I would love to hear from ya'll with suggestions and ideas. A big thanks go out to every one in the forum, I have learned soooo much in the little while that I have been a member

OH gee............what kind do you like to look at? want eggs? I have barred rock hens...........all laying everyday for me.......and Australorp hens.that just started laying.I got a silver spangle hamburg roo for "eyecandy"

I am sure some here can tell you the "best " layers, friendliset and all.........how exciting .

Well....I might suggest...looking at a few hatchery web pages....see what interest you. I personally love my RIR...and my Buff orps. They both lay large brown eggs....well the Buffs are not laying yet, but they are supposed too! LOL
Also, check locally....do you want peeps or laying hens? Standard chickens or Bantams? Feather footed babies...crested...Ohhhh the possibilities!!!

Hi there, yes we want eggs, we want to get about 8 pretty ladies, no studs. My DH wants large breed, I like Banties

If planning to get from hatchery, you may want to check, some of them are done with certain breeds till next season, As far as feed, check with local stores, you probbably wont have a lot of choice, youll start with chick starter till about ready or starting to lay then switch over to a layer feed that has extra calcium& stuff needed for layers. I would say to go with BUCKEYES they are lot like RIR just better looking.

Hey ya'll, I will send pics went there a ladies in their home. There is a
man out side of town that has hens for sale that are already laying for 2 bucks apiece, we are suppose to get 8 this afternoon. Wish us luck.
PS. We were told that they were good layers and large breed hens

My thought would be its not too old, but they may not lay as consistantly as a new pullet, but should already have gone through Moult, which usually means they lay a slightly larger egg too, They will lay for years, so its back to what you want out of the birds, If your wanting to have them as "PETS" too, it may take a while to get them to be friendly with you. There are posts on hear where members claim still laying at 8 years and older
