It is my first flock of chickens and they were unexpected so it has been a steep learning curve for me. I was not satisfied with any of the prefab coops, I do not have any wood working skills and dealt with a difficult chicken/coop seller, so it was a stressful process. I found a custom made used chicken coop I was satisfied with but even that was an ordeal. We had to take the whole thing apart and it took two days! The seller was very kind, they lent tools, their trailer and helping hands. I have photos of the coop from the original owner and pictures of my friends helping me take it apart. I couldn’t have done it without them. I got the coop, run, a large feeder, waterer, bedding, feed and other supplies for $400 and feeding the guys for all their labor was about $300.

Im currently taking a break from sanitizing it to post this lol. I plan to paint it and rebuild the run to be smaller since I have a smaller flock than the owner. The original owner and my friends are excited to see the completed coop!

That looks great! What a gift to have so much help. It looks like it will be a comfortable safe place for your chickens. Congratulations on your new chicken life. Best wishes. Welcome to BYC.

That's amazing and going to be beautiful! What a blessing to have so much help. Where are your chickens now, until the coop and run are finshed, and how many do you have? I think you'll want more ventilation than that, although the little portholes are very cute. Be sure and cover them with half-ich hardware cloth to keep snakes out. Can't wait to see the finished product! :clap

Yes I’m very lucky, I plan to throw a “baby shower” when my hens start laying and invite everyone that’s helped (or listened to me talk their ear off about my chickens lol).

I only have 3 in my flock and yes the original owner of the coop was very wary of snakes and other predators so it has hwc on the portholes and there is a big side window that has hwc too.

The chickens currently sleep in a big box in the house at night and go in a temporary run/free range in the day. They are very excited for the coop lol they usually don’t wander in my work area and I had to put them in the run because they were hopping inside the coop while I was painting! 😂
