So I got three buff orpingtons and three americaunas today! They are four days old and seem healthy. One Orpington continually sits on the head of another one. And the one that gets sat on seems smaller then the others. I wonder if this is normal behavior at all? Also, I have a dog that has killed chickens before and was looking for tips on introducing the dog to the baby chicks. Is there anything I should look for in the coming days as far as the chicks health is concerned? I used to be on here daily while I was deciding what breed I wanted and all that good research stuff. So I know some stuff but now that I have my girls I do not want to loose them for anything! Any advice or tips are much appreciated!

Congrats on the new babies!!!

It is normal for small chicks to be picked on and Orps are so easy going that they often don't fight back. Hope the small one survives ok.
As far as the dog is concerned don't let him near the babies! There are many horror stories on here about dogs killing chickens! I just went through this with mine! Once a dog has killed chickens they will always try again! There are a few dogs you hear about now and then that do just fine with chickens. My female leaves them be and shows no interest in them but I still would never leave her alone with them. Good luck with your new babies!!!

My dog is a hunting dog and hasn't touched our chickens yet, ((Knock on wood)). We kept the chicks in the basement, and that is where my dog sleeps, she just left them alone because she knew she would be in big trouble if she bothered them. Maybe you shouldn't introduce him to the chicks

i had to introduce him. his curiosity concerned me so i organized a meeting. My little dog is afraid of the babies. My cat wants them to hunt and the only one that has ever even seen a chicken (and then killed it) is very respectful and gentle. He even scared the cat off when she got too close to the box! I will not trust him alone with my new babies but he is a good dog and he is learning fast that i do not want him to touch my feathery friends!

Oh, as a side note, MY CHICKS SURVIVED THEIR FIRST NIGHT!

Quick question...and maybe i need to start a new thread....but what should their poo look like? one bird is pooping soft well formed poo and another just let out runny watery poo?
