Ok how are you doing your google searches for a loacal feed mill? I have to do mine by state for nothing comes up local it is all on the other side of the state except for our Co-Ops.

I'm curious where you went also! I am in North Central Florida - Micanopy - and googled feed mill for the Ocala, Gainesville, and Micanopy areas. I only got hits for the local feed stores and the Seminole Feed Mill, and OBS for horse feed.

Agreed, depending on the mill. We have some lovely ones here, and at least one "dink".

I think the most important matter is feed turnover. So many people (including myself) will buy the big brand feeds from feedstores. That's great if you're really very picky and versed at determining whether the feed you get has been stored right, sold quickly, etc. But if you're not, many people trusting the big brand names are ending up with these nutritional deficiencies because the feed is stored too long or too warm. This is particularly an issue with "crumbles", more so even than pellets because they're so highly processed and there's such a high surface to air ratio allowing for ingredients to degrade.

A good milled feed will have a vitamin/mineral package in it so that you don't end up with a sick flock. It will smell strongly of fresh ingredients. It might even shock you how strongly it smells if you're used to older feed. It'll be clean, not dusty (dust is devestating to the avian respiratory system - and ours), and your birds will thrive on it.

Definitely worth a look-see!
