Fire ants in the chicken pen

LOTS and LOTS of boiling water

Be glad you don't have them, they are HORRIBLE. Just imagine if all the ants you have would bite if they get on you. At least with insects like wasps you have to provoke them.

I have offered every bird here a sizable cash bonus plus central air conditioning to be installed in their coop IF ONLY they would eat up the fire ants on our property. So far, neither the chickens, guineas, ducks or geese have taken me up on this offer.

I use a few gallons of boiling water, poured from up high in order to have a forceful stream (wear high rubber boots, watch your legs!).

Sevin Dust is also effective, sprinkled over & around the mound. That doesn't bother the birds either.

I wonder if there is more than one type of fire ant, that some are more appealing to chickens, some are more easily eradicated by Sevin Dust.

There are different fire ants and I think I have them all. There are little red fire ants, on up to the huge red bull ants. The little ones are bad. They love my potted plants and the electrical boxes.

Oh I am so super disappointed to read this... I ordered the guineas hoping they would rid me of our horrible Fire Ant issues.
I guess it is back to DE.
I know that the guineas will eat other bugs etc... but MAN would I LOVE to be rid of these super high bred fire ants.
CRAZY!!!
