Yesterday we had one of our Americaunas lay her first egg. It was super fun and exciting! I was surprised because according to my calculations our first eggs shouldn’t come until sometime the last week of August. The first eggs looks good, but then we had another surprise, a second egg from the same chicken... but without a shell 🤯😱🤔. From what I’ve found in my research this can be normal, is this accurate? What can we do to help “harden” these second eggs up? Anything?

Now today the same chicken is showing some behaviors that she will lay another egg soon (so far nothing). However, another chicken from our set of Americaunas has been sitting inside of the nesting box for a couple of hours now. She was most curious about the first layers behaviors. Is this just a mimicking of behaviors or perhaps a sign that she will be the next to lay her first egg?

Can ya’ tell I’m a psychology major? 🤣🤣🤣

Congrats on your first eggs! Are you feeding layer pellets with free-choice oyster shell on the side?

They have a mix feed of scratch and layer feed. I will pick up some oyster shell today 👍

I sometimes toss them some yogurt or cottage cheese in their treats (bits of apples, meal worms, salad greens, etc.)

Yes, it's normal. Nothing to do but be patient and feed 'em good.

Do not mix scratch grains an layer feed.
What percentage protein is your layer feed?
Layer feed is meant to be the sole ration, it's in fine print right on the bag.
Adding scratch grain to it dilutes the nutrition levels, as do those other treats, and can make them pick out the scratch and ignore the layer feed.
A separate feeder with Oyster Shell is good to have around, not all will partake but some need more than others.

Thank you for the feed back. I will check when we are back at home. At the vet with a sick kitten who is scaring his mamas to death 🙁

:goodpost: I agree with this.
