First Annual Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatchathon- Join us! Set Day: Easter

Yesterday I cleaned out an old dog crate, the all plastic with a mesh window type, and hauled it over to the turkey coop. It didn't fit thru the door!!!! I started to unhinge the top and bottom sections but ran into bolts.

Guess I'll make a wooden nesting box instead. TRying to give the hens a clue!!

In my turkey pens I just have a good layer of oat hay... they love to scratch through it for the grain but they make depression/nests in the corners..

Yes! Some eggs do take a bit longer to hatch don't ya know?!

I still think it's weird that emu eggs take 2 weeks longer than ostrich eggs!!! an ostrich egg only takes 42 days... muscovies are 35...

It's a long story, so the short version is I am getting 6+ Narragansett eggs and 14+ Bourbon Red. So, depending on the +s, that could be a LOT of turkey eggs! (DH doesn't knowabout 6 of the BR.) Ohhhh, I guess they just sent a lot of extras!?!? LOL So that is why I said I may be overrun with turkeys. They are all being shipped, so that should probably lower my hatch rate. We need to build a new pen for them. Does anyone have a simple, economical plan for a turkey pen for maybe 10-15? Oh, do turkey eggs fit in an automatic turner? My first eggs should be here tomorrow today or Friday.

The rest have supposedly been shipped but haven't received USPS tracking number yet.

SCG I just checked the tracking and yours should definitely be in your hands today!!

I think mine might be here today as well. They left ID yesterday so they might be here today. Funny how it seems like they could be here faster (I can drive there in four or five hours) but the PO is not going to deliver them early. Oh no, you paid for two days, it will be two days (at least). LOL

I'm definitely among friends!!

THanks for the tip. I had bedded the coop with leaves and sticks that I rake up and dump in there. Trying to make it feel like home, though the 3 girls don't seem to appreciate it yet.

Quote: One box I mailed took FIVE days to make it half way across the US. THe USPS actually hand carried the box, no conveyor belts. Eggs seem to be developing very well, so I'm told! I think I did get my moneys worth that time!

Oh, MY! I will have to go look that up. It's certainly not a concept familiar to me, either.
<* thinking hard*> Surely that has no relevance to any of us! "Too" means "also" and "many" means more than a few.". Oh! I also have more than a few!
We're fine, then. No problem here.

That is hilarious!

Better old than scrambled! Hand delivered is SO much better! For example the 23 out of 24 hand carried Icelandic eggs I have locked down from NotAFarm

well.. it all depends on what temperature the emu eggs are being incubated

97.5 degrees makes it 50 days til hatch

95.5 takes it closer to 60 days

I've been incubating mine at 97.5 which seems to be the most "popular" artificial temperature... and I've had them hatch out anywhere from 47 days to 51 days

the next batch I incubate I'll experiment with the lower temps just to see if there is a marked difference in the chicks.
