First Annual Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatchathon- Join us! Set Day: Easter

welcome-byc.gif

This is my first time posting and my first time incubating, I'm glad I stumbled across this hatchalong, thanks for having me.
I am using a friend's Brinsea Octo 20 for this hatch, I fit 24 turkey eggs in it! I am most proud of the cabinet incubator I just built for experimentation, I wanted to play around and tweak it this year so we wouldn't have to buy poults from the hatchery next year. I set 30 turkey and 3 guinea eggs in it on April 2, I had very low expectations since some of the eggs were 17 days old and it was my first attempt. I candled them on Sat (day 12) and 24/30 and 3/3 were developing! I can't believe it, I prepared myself to be happy if at least 1 hatched. My expectations were also low because my temps fluctuated more then I would have liked the first week, I still can't believe how well they're doing, I can't wait to candle this batch! I had no idea how addictive incubating would be, I'm glad I built a cabinet that could hold 15 doz eggs! As I write this I have another 18 turkey eggs sitting next to me on the table waiting to reach room temperature, then into the bator! I'm building the hatcher this week and I bought 2 more turkey hens last week, so that makes 5... I think my husband is starting to get concerned :) I attribute most of my success to the wealth of knowledge I've found on this site but I also blame it for my addiction :)

They wanted the smallest chicks, thinking they could fake out the hen better that they came from her own eggs. They said they had been to the feedstore, but didn't like their chicks because they were all sleeping. LOL, mine were obnoxiously leaping into the air. I noticed many of them were chest bumping and trying to bite my fingers. I think a bunch of feisty little roos.

Anyway, she seemed a little concerned she could possibly end up with a rooster (noise and didn't want to get chased). Apparently she didn't know what "straight run" implied. I did show her my wellie rooster, he really is gorgeous and has been a gentleman since I got rid of my BA rooster. Those two were both full of hormones when they were competing.

She badly wanted my little Iowa Blue, since it was the smallest black chick.............nope, not for sale.

She originally picked a BSL with a little white dot, then changed to a pullet, "because it's blacker". I have to admit, I would have felt too guilty to sell her the first one, knowing it was a roo. She also picked a wellie chick when I assured her it would make no difference to the hen. I didn't check to see what sex it was. I just gave her the one she picked.

She assured me they had raised chicks before and had a heat lamp if they needed to raise the chicks themselves. They realized they didn't have any chick start & forgot to bring a box, so I gave her the end of a feedsack with about a pound of food in the bottom and put the chicks in a used chick shipper. She insisted she give me an extra dollar for the food. So I made my big sale of $5.

Only 14 left to get rid of from that hatch (not counting the 16 I was keeping)!

Well, it turns out all 10 of my turkey eggs where not fertile. The lady did say she wasn't sure if they were or not, so now I know. I do still have a lot of the Guinea eggs so at least those will hatch at the same time as everyone elses turkeys. Only about 1/4 of the eggs I got from this lady were fertile, I won't be going there again.

Sorry about your turkey eggs.

I would like to host a second contest. It will be another "caption contest" I just need the photo for it, as I do not have any that would work. If anyone has one that they wouldn't mind PM'ing me better yet several to choose from that would be awesome.

This is what I am going to offer as the prize:

Jesshan we were planning on doing a caption contest next week. We have the photo picked out. If you want to run it I will PM you the photo. Let me know.

Nevermind, Dsqard beat me to it.

Meep! Meep!

What does a crossed beak hen say?

Oh, nevermind, the mood has passed. It is this really dumb joke that I was up for a bit ago, but it has passed now. You all probably wouldn't have thought it was funny, anyway! It al always made me giggle and other people look at me like I had lost it.

Are you kidding me? I love groaners. Out with it. And if you haven't lost it yet, we need to help you lose it.

Beat me to it. That's what I get for sleeping in on my day off. Well, sleeping in means getting up at 4, doing my chores and going back to bed for 2 hrs.

Sorry no turkey poults this set.

I set another 19 turkey eggs yesterday... that makes 70 total plus 12 chicken eggs and 3 guinea... plus I'm trading a guy bourbon red for blue slate eggs next week... does the madness ever stop?

See you will be a great example for DH when he realizes how many turkey eggs I set. I don't think he has a clue about the 15 I set in addition to the 12 I had from my hen. I can just point to you Happy and say, see I'm not that crazy!
