Here are three females I had. The one on the far right is the mother of the other two. In this pic, she was around 20 months old and the other two were 8 months old. That is all the red "masking" that the females get.

Here is a 5 month old male. You can see more of a crest and masking on him, even at a younger age.

They don't make the noises that mallard deriviatives (all the regular ducks) make. The females make a "trilling" noise that is very pleasant and the males usually only hiss if "trying to make a point" to an "intruder". They don't need swimming water like other ducks but mine loved a splash and bath even in the cold. I don't have them anymore....too difficult in the cold to keep a coop clean with them!
