We had a chick hatch out like that but with both eyes...She has glaucoma and is completely blind Deb has taught her her to stand on the side of her dish so that she can find the food and water very labor intensive and took hours of teaching to get her to understand. she occasionly gets very frustrated about not getting to the food fast enough and can't seem to get it because she is searching to hard...and yells the place down. Both her eyes where swollen like that exactly and one ruptured then she seems to do much better...she is growing slowly and is feathering out now. We love her silly self her name is Missy. (Misfit)

well,i got 2 palm babies.not too bad since i started with 6 shipped eggs and this was my first time with turkeys.i think if i do it again that i will let a natural incubator do it tho.
one of them is small and has a swollen eye.hatched with it swollen.

i think this one is going to be.if you look close at the pics you can see her "good" eye looks like it has a cataract.when i shine a light on her ,you can definately see it.she still wobbles around so i can't tell anything yet.
a blind turkey for my first experience but i will do the best that i can.

Well I know how to break broodies now. Make them a really nice box, put them in it and give them a day to settle down and then let them out to stretch the next day. They will not be broodie any more.

I have the turkey eggs in the incubator now. Oh well we will see how this hatch goes.

Yes most likely she will be...I THINK it is more prevalent in females also. We almost culled Missy since we figure she can't really be with other chickens and wont be able to be outside, with no real hope of feeding herself. But when she gamely started feeding herself we said ok IF she can eat then we will figure it out! I guess we will keep her in a little cage like a parakeet.she screams and struggles still when you pick her up...like it terrifies her...until you cup her in your hands then she is ok.dunno what the outcome is gonna be..she is scruffy and silly looking and people say ewww when they look in at her...but she lives and seems quite determined about it. Stupid bird,I love her.

sorry your broody quit on you...




you can also break broodys by putting them in a cage with a wire bottom.. like a rabbit cage... for some reason the wire on the feet will break them pretty quickly

Make them a really nice box....

Just like them to break like that. I've never been successful in breaking a broody - wire cage, regular cage, taking them out of the coop... doesn't matter to my flock.

Maybe I should have dsqard make me a broody breaker box.

My last broody finally gave up after about 2 months!! As for the current girl, I was thinking of giving her some eggs just to keep her useful!

That's what I did. I found a guinea nest in the woods (I have no idea how old the eggs are) and when my second hen went broody, I gave her all the guinea eggs. All 25! I figured that if a Bo can cover and hatch 19 of 20 hen eggs, another can cover and hatch 24 guinea eggs! HaHa It made her happy, it broke up the guinea hen that was looking like she wanted to be broody in the woods and I had a friend ask about where to get guineas just last night. I said to wait two and a half weeks and I might be able to give some away! I don't want any more guineas!
