I am going to attempt to free range them. Any helpful tips appreciated.

CX can range well, if there's something to forage for(is there with the low temps you have?).
They will range better if raised with layer chicks that are more active.

There is just general leaf coverage in my yard right now. I planted cover crop in a small area but as of yet it hasn't done much. I may have just been to late in getting it in. My laying chicks forage ALL DAY LONG. So there is something out there to search for.
After starting a cocci treatment, everyone that is left seems to be doing great. We are also switched to pine shavings with no leg injuries to report.
I really like using the walk in shower as a brooder.

To get Cornish X to free range more only feed them towards the end of the day so the learn to look for food all day. I got that tip from @duluthralphie when I read his Toad raising threads. His threads are by far the most interesting in the meat bird section.

lol I went and looked up the exact post he said that on and he was replying to you so I am sure you already saw his exact words. I will be attempting the exact same method this spring myself.
