First batch of eggs ever starting today!

Who else is close to hatching? I go into lock down next Tues. with Australorps and BLRW, and maybe a couple of EE's, I know one is doing well, not sure about the other two.
More babies. :))

I'm not sure yet when to put mine into lockdown. A few were put in on the 20th, but the majority on the 19th. Would a day earlier harm the ones that were put in later? Or should I start lockdown on the first batches 19th day?

I started collecting eggs again yesterday, so I will shove another few dozen in once these come out.

Usually they go into lock down on day 18. You start counting the days...the day after you set them. I have some that I set just a day apart, so I am going to wait until day 19..see what happens. A lot of folks do day 19, but I usually do day 18. I think it's close enough either way, mama hen isn't sitting still. I just had a neighbor with a broody that got up off of her eggs on day 18 to go eat. They hatched.

I have 15 that are going into lockdown on Monday. I'm pretty excited about it and working on getting together everything I need for the brooder. WIll they be okay with a pretty strong light or does it need to be dim for night time?

It's according to how big your brooder is. I use the plastic bins, I have a real large bin, that I put a 75 W. in, and sometimes, need another lamp, according to how they are acting, the extra lamp is just a 40 W.
In my smaller bin, it heats up waaay fast, so I usually only need a 40 to start with. You will be able to tell if they need more, or less heat by the way they are acting. Are they huddling together? More heat. Are they spread out? Less heat. If they are settled down and just sleeping up against each other, just right! :)
Oh, and they don't mind the reg. light bulbs. In fact, they cry if they can't see. They will get up and eat and drink off and on all through the night once they get the hang of food and water.
