First Broody

Well I meant get rid of the eggs and try to break her by maybe putting her in a cage up off the ground like I've heard before. I hope I dont have to. I was just saying her life is more important to me at this point than hatching the eggs. She eats a little but it's the water I'm most concerned about. We do have to force her or she wont do any of it. and she's just so skinny. I havent had one before so maybe getting thin is even normal. IDK.

She's trying so hard to be a good mommy that I'm afraid she's gonna waste away.

They DO loose a lot of weight. That is normal. Some end up skin and bones but once they hatch out the eggs, they are supposed to bounce right back.

I have some cherries I'm gonna try. She has been eating and drinking when we make her. She still wont get off on her own though. Still no poop in 2 days. I bet that's uncomfortable. lol

I at least feel she's gonna be o.k. now. She just needed a lot of encouragement.

That's good to hear.

I went out to the coop this morning and found my girl off the nesting box eating.

I quick went to feel the eggs to guess how ling she's been off. They were a little cool but not too bad. I think she'd been off only about 10 minutes. That was scary. Only 4-5 days left. If she gives up now....

I do have another broody right now not sitting on any eggs. But if Louise gives up, I need to catch it right away and put them under Lucy. It's only 26* here. It could be a big problem if left to the cold. I'll be doing double duty in and out of the coop I think.

for you Fordsmommy. I hope she stays on.

She seems to be doing pretty good. She still seems thin to me but I guess that's par for the course from what you guys have said. We still have to make her get up to eat twice a day. She did eat a couple of cherries and pooped again finally yesterday. She seems confused at first when we get her up she just wants to lay back down. We have to work with her to get her to walk around and eat and drink. She's down to 13 eggs now as I candled and 3 didnt seem to be doing anything. It doesnt seem like 3 eggs is that many but it seems to be way more of a manageable number now. She does better about covering them all. Hatch day is the 25th so hopefully she'll make it till then.

That sounds like a better number to me too. 13 is a lot to get under a chicken. Must have been ment to be.

And thanks. She's still doing well. I treated them all with scrambled eggs with shells and strawberries this morning. They all LOVED that.
