Hi - just looking for some advice. I just had my first chick hatch threee days early. I have a Janoel24. Do I open the hole at the top to let the chick breathe even though I am trying to keep the humidity right up?

Hello and welcome to the site..

What do you mean by open the hole? The air vent? What kind of Bator are you using? Is she out of the
shell?
How long ago was this? :caf

Thanks for anwering! I am very new to this. I am using the Janoel 24 and yes I think it is an air vent at the top. I went into lock down last night so added the extra water etc.. I read that you should leave the hatched chick in the incubator for 24 hours after hatching. It hatched about an hour ago and still had a little bit of shell it is dragging around by something attached to it...What do you mean by Bator?

I never close my ventilation holes, so yes, I would... oxygen is most important for new hatched chicks... :)

Well done on your new chick!!

Warmth is great but they need air.
If its chilly out then maybe make the room temp warmer.
I had my chick in the living room and even though he was warm, I had the room temp slightly up too.

Bator was an abbreviation for incubator.
Not saying to do this, but I pull them out and place them into the warm brooder to dry. I am quick with the lid, to not change the internal atmosphere of the bator. I try to prevent roll overs from rambunctious first hatchers.
This is not a recommendation. Just sharing my method.
But... Place a thermometer in your brooder. Adjust the height of the lamp to a safe and optimal level. Just having a heat lamp is not all there is to it.
Adjust it accordingly for optimum safety and efficiency.
I wish you the best of success on your first hatch.
The more you do, the more you improve...
