I live in TN once they go out to the coop if there is any really cold weather after that I'd bring them back inside until it warms back up. How are chickens with stairs? That's what I have going up to the second story.Are you in a warm climate? Chicks usually aren't outside in the coop till they are fully feathered out.
We, and a large part of the country have been suffering with tons of snow, wind, ice and record low temps. Bit by bit spring is trying to break thru but, then we get another really cold snap.
I'm wondering how high your second story is -some breeds are too heavy to fly much, some are afraid of steep ramps into the coop. Of course young chicks may have trouble doing either.
