First coop under construction 😳

We are converting our boys’ wooden playhouse into our first coop. Lots to learn and research! We have a new TSC in town and plan to possibly get chicks there. We only want hens (can’t have a rooster) and they told me I’d have to get pullets. She said they’d still be young, but I’m not sure if that means we skip the brooder stage? Looking forward to gathering info and support here. Thank you

Pullets is just what females are called for the first year of their life. "Started pullets" are teenage birds close to egg laying.

Welcome to BYC Pullets is young hen before laying. TSC usually has chicks. I have seen where some do have a bin of pullet chicks. All the Best making your decision on what to bring home.,

With respect, your odds of finding actual "pullets" right now will be very hard. You are more than likely going to have to start with chicks- which is perfectly fine (and better for some reasons as well). You can absolutely get sexed chicks- they will simply say "female". Don't buy "straight run" as that is a mix of boys and girls. Also- don't fret getting a cockerel by accident, they can be given away / sold on craigslist very easily.
