As I understand it, you will see the heart enlarged, or fatty deposits, or find clots... you will also see large quantities of fat if they are too fat.
Once the bird is dead, the blood will stop flowing and will clot, so the heart will have clots in it anyway, since the bird wasn't bled out at death.
But the rest, lots of fat around the heart, and an enlarged heart, those are definite signs of congestive heart failure, which is what these birds develop that leads to them dying of heart attacks. CHF for short. That's what's happening when they start getting wheezy, and you see the combs turn dark purple when they're resting on their keels, but return to the normal red when they get up and walk around.
