First crack at raising backyard chickens

I have been reading quite a bit about raising chickens and finally decided to give it a try. I have 10 little ones in a brooder in the basement, they are just a week old. The weather here -- west Michigan -- has been brutal -- and it doesn't look like it is going to get much better soon. The transition to the cold will be a challenge

When they are about 6 weeks old, you can get them out into the coop. If the weather is still really cold at night, you can take the heat lamp out there with them for a week or two and use it only at night. Just enough heat to take the chill off.
