First disaster...

Hello Everyone! 2 weeks into my first flock and one of my buff orps is seriously ill. Last Saturday I noticed a bit of bloody poo, not a lot just one or 2. I watched carefully and saw no more. Tuesday evening my buff ( 16 weeks old and one of 3 from breeder in Lancaster) was exceptionally cuddly and clingy. Wed she was quiet but eating and drinking well. Thursday she declined into lethargic type state and was closing one eye. I started corid in water thurs morning. Everyone else is totally fine, however she is in hospital box in my bathroom warm and dry... And eating and drinking slowed down. I've dosed her well tonight every hour with corid water mixed stronger ..about 5 hours worth now. Is there too much corid risk? And how long does it take? Raining and cold here in NJ so I have her in warm and dry so I can treat her all night. Does it sound like I am too late? She is so very sweet! Thx for listening and offering your valuable advice!

Welcome to BYC. Bloody poo doesn't occur until the chicken has cocci for a couple of days, so she may be sicker than others. You are doing the right thing in giving her the medicine orally, since the sickest ones stop drinking. If you are using liquid Corid, you can give a couple of drops undiluted a few times a day until she starts to improve. Usually you will start to see improvement in a day or two. Thank you so much for the response. I am using powder corid from TSC no liquid available. I am treating the others who are doing super great. I think her color may be returning but the lethargy is really pronounced. How strong can I make the powder solution? Nervous chicken mama!!

Normally, the severe outbreak dosage is 1.5 tsp of powder per gallon of water, but I'm not sure about making it more concentrated because I wouldn't want to recommend too strong of a dose.

Ok I must got another 2 ml of treated water In that stubborn beak of hers! Thx for advice and cross your fingers! I cannot believe the joy and laughter from these girls in such a short time.. They truly are lovies.

Well she is still here... Color a little better...feistier when handled but still lethargic...did a normal poo and white runnier one both with no blood...will continue with syringe medicating thru day... Poor girl

Ugh how long for this to work? Been syringe feeding since Friday night every hour or so with yogurt corid and adding probiotics!!! Water also... She ate last night by herself but today more quiet..how much longer?? Thx I'm at the end of my rope!

Don't give yogurt at the same time as the Corid. Milk products can coat the intestine and make it more difficult to treat the problem. You don't want to be offering any protection to the protozoa that has invaded the intestinal walls by coating them up with dairy products. Buttermilk is often used as a way to coat the intestine and slow down the coccidia when meds are not available but you don't want that happening when you are trying to get to the cocci in the gut with Corid. I would hold off on the probiotic's as well until you've completed the course of treatment with Corid. So, quit the yougurt and keep at it with the Corid and see if she perks up.
