First duck gone

No rest for the weary! I was just blow drying my hair and saw both remaining ducks streak across the yard in mirror. I ran to the back door and out into the yard just as a (what I think was) juvenile red tail swooped through the yard. Both girls had made it safely into the run by the time I got out there but jeez!

We have a lot of hawks in the neighborhood and once in a while a few will start to circle, high up, weighing their options but normally I will go out and yell and wave my arms, or let the dog out, and they head off for easier prey.

This little hawk was much smaller than the full size red tails, and while it could have been some other kind of BoP, his excitement about going after two big ducks, which the full grown hawks normally don’t even bother with, makes me wonder if it was just a youngin. Jeez Louise! We’re going to have to have a run extension party ASAP!

@CrystaBub you and I are not far from each other and we have the exact same issue here. My guys do NOT get to free range or they would definitely be gone. They only get to come out and play when I am out there. And my American Bulldog, they steer clear when she is around. Do not mess with Lucky's ducks! She loves them so much.

The original plan was only outside when we were with them but then you know... it got expanded to if we are home or if we won’t be gone long. Looks like we have to go back to the original plan though, unless the dog is outside with them.

Our old hound is so chill with them, but she doesn’t like to be outside for very long. I wish she did because she is big and a good protector but she’s also about 1000 years old so I wouldn’t make her do anything she doesn’t want. All my animals are spoiled!

Awwww Lucky's ducks - I just love that!!!! Yeah it's horrible - I feel bad they can't just stay out all day - but I'd feel worse if they were breakfast/lunch/dinner for a raptor!

My original plan was to let mine free range during the day and then the secure house at night but when I saw my neighbors chickens getting eaten up last year I changed my tune. Yes my old dog won't stay out there either unless I am out there too. Animals are made to be spoiled, aren't they?
