First duckling hatch of 2025!

R5 is now named “Barry”. I believe Barry is a chocolate or light chocolate dusky but it’s hard to tell yet

I am finally ready to incubate my first ducklings of the year! The father is my buff colored, mixed laying breed, drake, Banana. The mother is my purebred Khaki Campbell duck, Cardamom “Cardi”. If I’m understanding color genetics correctly, the ducklings will be sex linked. The girls should be buff like dad. I did step 1 today, putting Cardi and Banana in their own pasture together. Next step is seeing if she is laying right now . So it’s still a long time until I have ducklings. I will post photos of the ducklings and incubation updates here for fun.

I tried moving Barry into the brooder this morning - but unsurprisingly he freaks out every time I try to leave and won’t stay under the heat plate. For now he is back in the incubator with R2 who still hasn’t hatched. R2 sometimes sticks their bill out through the hole but I don’t see it attempting to make any progress

Yep! He’s a little jerk but something about that makes him cute. good luck with your hatch I’ll have some ducklings of my own hatching soon as well!

R2 looks like a blue magpie? I’m not sure. I’ve never had a duckling this color before. I’m smitten!
