First Egg Countdown

This was my pleasant surprise yesterday! Patience, by not going out every hour, reaps reward of 5 at one time! I wish I had put something in the pic for scale - these are all Bantam eggs, and the basket is about 5 inches across at the handle! I just love my little kids! They bring smiles to everyone who sees them!

Heehee, congrats on the cute little eggs Denise! Has Mumbles or Peanut started laying yet? They should be 22 weeks old by now.

Not yet, they are still cooing most of the time. Altho, I heard Peanut practicing her egg song, so it might be soon. Also, remember Tinkles, she's decided to nest in the straw outside the coop & runs. Not a great place, any suggestions as to how to get her in the nest boxes?

Congratulations on the Eggs!

Make sure you have fake eggs or golf balls in the nest boxes and lock them in the coop for three days.

I do suspect she will start using the nest box any way though. Mine did after a couple of weeks--they did not like me removing the eggs from under the squash plants, so now they lay in the nest boxes. It was like hunting Easter eggs for awhile.

They do jump up into the coop and stare at me when I take the eggs though...Funny chickens

Still no eggs but Hazel (the EE I fully expected would be near-to-last to lay based on her comb) did an egg squat for me today! She's also the only one who seems less-than-repulsed by the cockerel's attempts so I'm hoping that this is a sign I'll get an egg from her soon... All of the other "signs" have yielded nothing but I'm still hopeful.

Wee I still don't have any eggs and I don't think I will ever get any with the weather getting colder. I should start to get eggs form one of my chickens that went broody a time back. I really need more.

When I went out this morning to let them out and check on things I noticed two of the fake eggs we have in there were kicked out, but no real eggs. When I put the fakes back in their nest buckets, my RSL, Verna, was kinda giving me the stink eye and kept nosing in the buckets. She couldn't get enough of my attention either. She even perched on my shoulder...very out of character for her! After lunch I heard "singing", I went out to check on things and noticed from the door that the fake egg had been kicked out again! This time it was replaced by a pretty little brown beauty!!

I have 24 hens that are exactly 4 months today. 3 of these girls look very close to egg laying(wattles and combs/size and color). I can't be entirely certain it was Verna, but she seems different now, like she's a "grown-up" now!

Such an exciting day--my boys were super excited when they came home from school to learn about the news! Can't wait to find the next ones!!
