slowly all the pullets are starting to lay. I now have 5? 4 for sure. My older ones are molting so I am glad that the young ones are starting. I kinda fell sad for the two that are molting for it is getting very cold at night here.

2/3 hens have laid their first eggs

Well I think, but I'm not positive yet, that my 8 1/2 month old orp laid her first egg yesterday. How whoever it was got in and out of that trap nest w/out getting trapped is beyond me but it sure looked like a pullet egg and she's the only pullet with a really dark red comb.

Wow, we now have 3 of 6 girls who hatched the 1st of June laying!
Our Rhode Island Red began laying the last week of October, the Black Australorp started laying about 3 days ago, and today I'm fairly sure that the egg I found *on the ground* in the run was from our Welsummer.
Fun!
The first two girls laid in the nest boxes, but it looks like the Wellie hasn't figured it out yet. Will she figure it out on her own or do you all have any tricks to share? We've had a plastic easter egg in each of the 3 nest boxes for a couple of months now.
Thanks!
And congrats everyone! There's nothing better than your own fresh eggs! My 2 year old twins are beyond excited every single time we find one.

We got our first egg about a week and a half ago. We have 7 pullets (1 Welsummer, 1 Barred Rock, 2 Easter Eggers, and 3 baby mixed chicks). The Welsummer is the only one who looks like she should be laying (red comb and waddles). We have gotten a few more eggs on and off since the first one. Poor Coco is having a hard time figuring out where to lay the eggs so we have been locking them all up in the coop/run the last few days. Today, TWO eggs appeared in the next box:) Is it possible they are both from our Welsummer? They look IDENTICAL so I think yes. They are a nice darker brown, just like a Welsummer's should be... But, I thought they could only lay one a day??? What is up??

Congrats to everyone who is still getting first eggs! Wow your girls are working hard even in winter! And here I was worried that this thread would be pretty much dead until spring again
