The Wellie will figure it out on her own.

Oops almost missed your question. It is probably your Wellie that's laying on the ground. Pullets seem to be surprised when their first egg happens (come to think of it, I wouldn't know what to do either). The first couple of eggs seem to happen wherever the bird is. They'll figure out what the feeling means pretty quickly though, and go to the boxes.

The only thing I'd advise you to look out for is if it keeps getting laid outside consistantly. That means one of your girls is either being bullied away from the nests, or something in the nest is freaking them out (ie snake sleeping there).

Good luck!

Just got my first egg today but I don't know who layer it.
I have 5 that were hatched in April; Welsummer, Gold Star, GLW, EE, BR and two that are 1.5 yrs old one is a RIR and the other is black with black legs. They haven't laid since coming here in September even though the guy I got them from said they were laying. It's a smallish egg so I think it's from one of the younger girls. Waiting patiently for the others to start too!

I was thinking maybe her as well. Today I feel a bit like a stalker, I keep running out to see if anyone else has laid anything yet!

Yay grats! It look exactly like the color that my Gold Comets produce as well! I bet it will be delicious.
