First Egg Countdown

Great thread! I love all the pictures and stories of first eggs.

Here's my BSL, Gladys. I estimate her age to be about 22 weeks. Here she is a week ago:

and then 2 days ago:

This afternoon, she did her first squat. She's my first ever chicken, so I'm really excited about her laying. Think it will be soon?

I have a RIR who will following right behind her in a week or two, I think. Also big growth spurt in her comb.

My girls are 17 weeks today. One of my australorps is exploding into red but I haven't seen her squat yet. The "top hen" partridge rock is also pretty rosy, but nowhere near that australorp. Her wattles must be half an inch already. I'm going to do the happy chicken dance if I get eggs before 20 weeks!!!

Gladys does indeed look like she's seriously considering laying soon. I would say that she'll do it within the next two weeks or so. I'll cross my fingers for you

My BLS named Shadow laid her first egg today. I am so excited that I have all three of my girls laying eggs.

Does anyone know how often she will lay and how many eggs she will lay please let me know.

You meant BSL or Black Sex Link? Those are egg laying machines. They are at the top of the list for laying eggs.

Eggs will be small at first and will gradually get bigger. Often they will be hit and miss for the first month, but will lay close to an egg a day except for molt and low light next winter.
