First Egg Countdown

I'll join! I have a big variety- 5 Black Australorps, 5 EE's, 6 RIR's, 2 Buff Orps, 3 Light brahmas, and 4 Barred Rocks. They are all 17 weeks, 2 days! I'll post some pictures maybe tomorrow but I don't know how yet.

What's all this talk of Oyster Shells? Are they required? I also have a Barred Rock Roo and some other kind of Roo-Golden Laced Wydanotte?-with Mental Issues. He picks up bits of straw or whatever in his mouth and kind of flips out, walking around and clucking hysterically. Neither of my roos have shown any aggression so far!

Thanks! I thought my mom was joking with me about it really. She was sitting there watching hte chickens, knowing I have been waiting for them to lay. She said "I think I see an egg in between where they are sitting." I said "I think you are seeing things." But she was right! They were born in mid Jan. Still waiting for my ProReds, BO's, and BA's to lay they were born mid March.

Ill join! My girls are around 14 weeks old, but I am finding egg yokes everyonce in a while, so I added some laying feed. I think it's one of my black sex links.

Oh fun! I want to play. I have 3 that should be laying, but aren't. They are 18 months and i just "adopted" them 6 weeks ago. They are molting I think. I also have 2 Black Cochins that are 20 weeks. I have a BO, two Wyandottes, and an EE who are all 17 weeks. Somebody needs to give me an egg soon, I am DYING over here!

Every day I go out and talk to my girls, and nicely tell them how much I would like an egg. Maybe I should start threatening to give them a time-out? It works with my 4 year old...

Wow I didn't expect so many people to have hens they are waiting on! It's good to have company

.

Update: Drusilla grew a big ol red comb overnight! She now looks like a mature Gold Comet hen!

. She is probably sick, however, of me following her around the yard and commanding her "squat! Squat you freeloader!"

I swear it's the chickens that turned me crazy, I wasn't this way to start with!

Of the three red comet girls, I have one that suddenly has a very pink comb, I however, cannot say it's red yet

The other two are still lagging with the yellowish colored combs, but they seemed to have filled out a bit more and are looking more mature this past week, not so gangly teen-ish.

Pele-I hope your big red comb means some big brown eggs very soon, like tomorrow.

I've been having the egg laying lecture/pep talk every night for the last few nights, even with a live demonstration with a golf ball and my best egg song. They all looked at me like I was crazy. The younger pullets pecked at the ball (NO! Bad chicken!) and the older ones proceeded to completely empty the nest box of all of the grass and such that I worked so hard to make pretty and inviting

. They've also been warned that if I don't have eggs by July, I'm going to start eating them for breakfast with my bacon.

Hope all of you waiting for your first eggs are pleasantly surprised very soon!

All 15 of mine are 14 weeks old. And I'm waiting patiently. I estimate august so well see. I have black australorps, buff orps, Delawares, and rir.

I have 6 15 week old chickens. 2 dark brahmas, 2 black ones (I think one is an australorp and the other is a jersey giant because there is such a size difference) and 2 production reds.
Here are some pics (sorry the pics are so blurry)

Here's my red sex link at 14 weeks old, and she's about 18 weeks old now. This pic shows her comb and wattles pink...but now they are very red and the comb/wattles got twice as big (as did her butt). I have already made her a nest box, put some straw in there and a golf ball, and she's been investigating it, kicking up the straw, and even sitting in it (though not for long). Not too long now, right?!
