First Egg Countdown

Mable, my SLW (mixed with something) laid her first egg today. I knew she was in the nest and then she came rushing out to drink water like crazy. I checked the nest and found a tiny quail size egg. 1 oz (28 grams) only. No egg song, no announcement, everything was done quietly. Wondering if it has anything to do with her being beat-up all the time by my red-stars. I am surprised she found her way to the nest though because she hasn't been allowed in that area by the red-star since I got her almost 4 weeks ago.

Hopefully the second egg will be bigger!

Here are her 10 day old pictures:

Finally my second layer of the bunch! My EE joined one of her Ancona sisters and laid a beautiful sage green egg yesterday! Five more to go...

I have a question: does pecking order play any role in when they actually lay an egg? I have 2 RIRs that have been squatting for over a month now but are the lowest in rank and it seems they are beyond ready but are waiting for the others to go first. Might just be me postulating as a means of tampering my insane desire for them to lay already!

Congrats Juni, you put a lot of time and effort in them. This one particularly thought maybe you are going to fire her so she laid an egg under pressure! :D just kidding, great job!

Love you for joining the forum just to respond to my post. Hopefully you will become a chicken lover one day.

Congrats!

Pecking order does not affect when they lay the egg, that is only on their bodies maturity. However, pecking order will determine where you find the egg. Lower ranking hens will be kicked out of the nest box by higher ranking hens.

We have now gotten our 3rd egg in 3 days! Yay! They are very small and not fertile though. Hoping for bigger fertile eggs to come. We would like to start hatching babies soon.
