First Egg Countdown

Finally got 2 first eggs today from my Barred Rocks! They are 24 weeks! Yahoo!

Wow, two first eggs in one day? Great! Pretty girls too!

Today I got 3 eggs! Yay! 3 out of 4 are paying rent. If the youngest pullet waits as long as the others did to lay I won't get 4 eggs until Feb. Can't wait to see what color egg Henrietta the EE will lay.

Just want to make sure my girls are ok. 0 degrees tonight. Heated water and food in enclosed coop. Tomorrow below zero temps, windchill 20 to 30 below. Small vent holes at very top of coop. Ones in the direction of the wind have been covered with a towel. Should I put them in the garage?

Oh wow, stay warm. We're getting low temps here in NC too which is very unusual for us. Going into the single digits tonight, but nothing compared to you. Hope that your chickens and you are okay. I'm new at this chicken thing, so maybe someone else will advise.

Congrats! 4 of my 5 barnevelder pullets are now laying too. It's really nice to have eggs again!

They should be fine. Chickens deal quite well with the cold.

Belljmr, I do not think you have to put them in the garage. My 9-month-old mixed flock took sub-zero temps (-5 to -10) in the coop this winter so far, with only some mild frostbite on the rooster's comb. Your coop, like mine, probably stays about 10 Degrees warmer than ambient with the chickens and heated waterer in it, if you block most of the wind. I feel if you have good food and water available in the coop for them, and some ventilation, they will be fine. Watch for condensation on the ceiling. Very tough birds considering they evolved from Jungle Fowl! Good luck!

In just went out to check water and close up the coop a bit and one of the other (not the gigantic comb girl) brown leghorns squatted! The nest box is ready with wooden eggs in it!! Soon hopefully!!

I have 1 Barnavelder girl that I have been waiting to lay (she is now 30 weeks old) - she has been squatting hard for 2 months, but still no eggs. I put in some wooden eggs a couple days ago, but a few of the girls got really upset they were in one of the nests. Guess they figured out the difference - it was quite the production they put on for me.

I hope yours go faster than my barney has.

I have another new layer today. My Golden Buff laid her first egg today. It was a brown with a tint of purple or plum. I have 3 of my 16 23 week olds laying eggs now! It was neat seeing all three in their own nest box this morning!

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately two of my girls did get mild frostbite on the tips of their combs. Makes me angry quite honestly. They are more like pets and I've failed them. I've put some heavy duty cream on to help them heal. Just frustrated. Have to think hharder about the rest of the winter.hope everyone else fairs well this winter.
