First Egg Countdown

I'm currently awaiting my precious flock of 5 araucanas, 3 dark cornish, 3 silver spangled hamburgs, and 4 barred rocks to stop holding out on me and start laying. My girls are 22 weeks old this past Friday. They are spoiled rotten, between their laying crumbles and healthy snacks so I guess it's just a waiting game now. A couple of my girls have red combs which I read here is an indicator that it'll be soon. I guess they are just not ready or they're mad I haven't ordered them mealworms in a couple weeks. Here are a few pictures of my girls.

Awww! So pretty! I'm partial to the SS Hamburgs, as we have 13 pullets and a cockerel of that breed, but I love all chickens! It shouldn't be too much longer! One of our Hamburgs laid the first egg at a little over 26 weeks!

My first egg (on left) from Thursday and the second egg (on right) from today. I'm hoping to get my third tomorrow!!!!
Congrats! Love that dark egg!

Here are the eggs we got today. Nine! I have come to the realization that we have way more eggs than we know what to do with. I've got three dozen in the fridge right now, not counting what we got today! Yikes! I'm seriously going to go ask the local food bank if they would be willing to take some of our eggs. Lol!

We gave a few to the crows this morning for helping us drive hawks away from our property, they do a fabulous job of it and I am more than willing to bribe them to hang around, but it didn't even make a dent in the growing pile. I guess it's a matter of being careful what you wish for!

You can cook them and feed them back to your chickens too. They love the extra protein.

Ten months is an awfully long time to wait for that! It is adorable. This should get her going!
10 months is not at all unusual for a barnevelder. They are slow to mature.

Quote: Can't see the others well enough, but this pullet is not ready to lay yet. She will get much redder in the face.

We are having cold rain and sleet today, but luckily it does not seem to bother the chickens-- we got 6 eggs today, and all but one were actually in the nest boxes this time. They are starting to get the hang of things....
