First Egg Countdown

I'm fairly new to this as I've only gotten my first egg about 5 days ago but I also let my chickens free range. I make a point to not let them out until late morning or early afternoon. When I come home from lunch about 12 there is usually and egg waiting for me. I have noticed thought that when I let them out they go back in the coops one or the other and lay....not always in the nesting boxes but they do lay in the coop. Although it's not like I have woods or anything around me so I imagine that the coop is where they feel safest to lay.

I have 10 RIR's I got my first egg Aug 1st, They were 18 weeks old. I now have two ladies laying, as I'm getting two eggs a day but can't tell which ones are laying. The eggs are small and I'm hopeing they will get larger as time goes by.

Congratulations on the eggs!

I have three RIR's at about the same age. One has been laying an egg a day for a week now. The other two have not started yet but will soon.

Great fun

Here are a couple of YouTube videos of the "I just laid an egg" song:

Here's a couple of videos of an "I gotta lay an egg" song

And last, but certainly not least, is a chicken-human egg song duet.

I did not record any of these, but I listened to them when I was trying to figure it out myself. I would say they're pretty accurate (tho never tried the duet thing.)
Enjoy!

I'll join this thread now. My GC's are 14 weeks old, and have more birds a few days younger, it won't be long!! Funny thing is, my RIR's are getting larger, redder combs and wattles before the Comets! I'll post new pix Fri.

I am so excited! Heidi, my Red Star, squatted for me today!!! It was unmistakable and she has NEVER done that before! And she stood there, completely still while I petted her, another thing she has never done!

There is some dispute about her age....the lady I bought her from said she was 18 weeks already (which would make her 21.5 weeks now) but when I posted pics here people thought she looked about 14 weeks (which would make her 17.5 weeks now). Her comb and waddles have really grown and reddened but I'm sure they aren't done yet!

Anyway, it was a wonderful *milestone* reminding me that eggs are around the corner!!

I also have a Cuckoo Marans who is clearly much less mature than Heidi and an EE who is only 12 weeks. I am going to be waiting a while on those 2, but I can be more patient if Heidi is giving me eggs!

I can SO identify with that. I have seven - and only three are laying. But as soon as one started laying, the intensity of "WHEN WILL THEY FINALLY LAY SOME EGGS" was gone. I had a similar experience with one squatting for me yesterday. It was one that hasn't started laying yet, and yet she let me stroke her back for a few minutes before she walked away. That has NEVER happened with her before. She was also investigating the nest boxes yesterday - so maybe today's the day for her. She's an EE, so I'm eager to see what color egg she will lay.

Good luck - hope you get that first egg today!

Well today was my day!!!

I am so excited!!!! Can't you tell by all of the exclamation points!!??? I thought I was going to hyperventilate when I went out today and checked the nest box. I'm not sure why I am amazed at chickens doing what chickens do. It's just so much fun!

Now a question? Should I leave the golf balls in there for a while until all of the girls get the idea? Also, I have a RIR, a BSL and a RSL. Who is the likely layer of this beautiful orb??
