Hahaa, Gifa was the victim of timing. Her girls were just starting to think about laying when winter hit, which made them say 'nevermind'.

Heheh. Either my welsummer or my BCM is laying again. These two have been a bit frustrating. One will lay two eggs in two weeks, then take a 3 - 8 week break. One has stopped since we turned the clocks back and hasn't started up again yet.

But, at least most others are laying again. I think all but 2 PRs, 1 Dom, and one of the dark layers is putting out at a decent rate. I got a dozen eggs the other day! Whee, spring is coming!

I was asking this question on a smaller thread and I guess no one saw it. I know this is a begninner question, but that's what I am. Can I assume my girls will continue to grow after they start laying. If so, will the eggs get bigger too?

I believe the hens are as big as they will get (but not necessarily as fat) at close to 2 years. Pullet eggs are generally smaller, then will get bigger until they level off at around 2 years old.

Yep and yep. They will continue to fill in more and the eggs will get bigger gradually over time.

Hello, fellow noob! (I am also new!)

I have been tracking my hen's laying, and the size of their eggs since my very first egg back on October 18th.

Here is a snapshot of my spreadsheets through the first of the year that shows 2.5 months of laying data on my girls!





The graph on the top left shows the change in egg weights, which I am recording in the table on the bottom left. I track in grams but you can see that there is a significant increase from the first eggs and even differences in size between the first eggs of different breeds.

My leghorn's very first egg, laid when she was just 21 weeks old was a wee 38 grams. She's 38 weeks old now. Her biggest egg to date was 58 grams... Her last two were 57.

The SLW who started when she was 24 weeks old, started out with a 41 gram, and her biggest egg to date was also 58 grams...also a week ago.

The EEs have been all over the place.

Yolanda is my smallest EE... she's about the size of my Leghorn, she started out at 26 weeks with a 47 gram egg, and has managed a 57 gram egg twice since the first of the year.

Bridget on the other hand is my largest chicken, I'd say she's the size of a SLW Rooster. She's an EE she started at 24 weeks with a 54 gram egg. Her largest so far has been 67 grams.

Saffron and Kaylee both, are about the size of my young SLWs. Kaylee started laying at 24 weeks old, Saffron waited until last week to start laying at 37 weeks old. Kaylee's first egg was 44 grams, Saffron's was 55 grams. Kaylee's biggest was 61 grams about a week before she went into a little 9 month molt and quit laying. Saffron laid her 6th egg today... her 4th egg was 59 grams.

Judging from the names of your hens, it looks like you're a Firefly fan.

We named our hens after characters from Battlestar Galactica...hehe.
