You are going to be mighty disappointed if you expect them to be laying at 16 weeks. Chickens are individuals that mature at different rates. They will lay eggs when their bodies are ready. Early laying can cause laying problems later in life for them. It's better if they start laying later. We have 4 Rhode island red chickens 10 weeks old.6 more weeks!!! I'm so anxious for some eggs![]()
I will be sure to let you know when the first egg will be.
Congratulations!Got our first egg today! The chickens will be 20 weeks old tomorrow...Buff Orpingtons.
Congrats!our first eggs from my black sex link
You guys don't know how lucky you are that your hens are laying as such early ages! Most of mine didn't start laying until after they were 26 weeks old, one was 32 weeks old and one didn't lay until she was 49 weeks old! (She was 3 weeks shy of being a year old!) I have a whole new group of pullets who are now on week 21 and no eggs from them yet. Here we go again!
I'm on the same boat! All of mine are going to be 27 weeks this week and still no eggs. I have 4 BA and 2 RIR. I think my two week old baby chicks will lay before they do!You guys don't know how lucky you are that your hens are laying as such early ages! yea, I have one of about everything! RIR, orphington, polish, welsummer, barred rock, 5 Easter eggers, silkie, leghorn, and the juveniles are Naked neck turkens (green egg layers!), wheaten marans, speckled Sussex, salmon favorelles, Isbar, and a mix or two. My little babies are all blue egg layers....wheaten ameraucanas and some ameraucana/leghorn mixes.WHat types are they, usually Heritage types take longer, which is better in the long run, they will not burn out as quick lay 4 to 5 egss a week but for longer, My red cross hybrids didnt start until around 22 weeks but they lay 7 eggs a week for weeks on end, but they fizz out after a few years and are more prone to issues......
Yes it is. Ours are pretty small also, but they will get bigger.I have 2 bsl 2 ba and 4 leghorns my 2 bsl started laying a week ago and today 2 of my white leghorns started laying along with 1 of my ba which I just witnessed an hour ago lay her first egg all chickens are 23 weeks old now the fun is really starting its awsum waiting for those eggs which are all times of the day although the eggs are pretty small right now which should grow in a couple months I hope its pretty gratifying
I kind of knew this, about the early layers. Never read it anywhere, but it just makes sense. Maybe the others will wait until they are around 30 weeks. That'd be ok with me.You are going to be mighty disappointed if you expect them to be laying at 16 weeks. Chickens are individuals that mature at different rates. Congratulations!
Congrats!
I dont think that matters, really, how old is the baby...if it a bantham, they really dont lay many eggs, she'll prob start up soon, YOU might want to try and separate and see what happens, My old broodies would start laying after a couple weeks, but Its worth a shot in seperating..also give layer feed and make sure shes not hiding them eggs
