First Egg Countdown

Huh.   New eggs/first time eggs.   So boring lol.

Just kidding!!!!!!

I added up all the eggs I got in June, our first ones ever, and we got 11 that month.

Now for July, the production really ramped up, we got    95!

Unbelievable for us, to go from 0 in May to 95 in July.   Wonder what August will bring, 2 girls still to come on line.
Have not sold any yet, they are too delicious and we are giving some away for the fun of it.

How many hens do you have?

^^^First time chickeners we are, MalMom.

We got 8 on Feb 28th this year. 2 turned out to be roosters. 1 of the roosters was headed for freezer camp last weekend, but ended up giving him away since we went to an Indiana meet/greet/processing time. Somebody wanted him since he is apparently a good looking SLW, with a nice rose comb. Traded him for free, came home only to discover our other roo, a New Hampshire, committed sucide somehow.

5 days before Spike committed suicide, we got a salmon favorelles, she is about 2 weeks younger than the others. So, from our original 8, we have 6, 5 of those are laying. Plus the 1 favorelles makes 7 total. 2 white leghorns, (1 egg each day from each), 2 sex-links (3 eggs in 2 days) a SLW hen(5 eggs/week). The smallish New Hampshire pullet is nowhere near laying yet, neither is the favorelles. Week ending July 27th we got 32 eggs!

Not much of a vegetable garden this year, but we've never had fresh eggs before, this summer is eventful.

A week ago today I was excited to post a photo of our very first egg. As of yesterday we have gathered 8 over the past week. 2 in one nest box yesterday. I can't wait to get home and see what we have today. So awesome!!

i'm not sure if they will continue to lay outside the coup. they know where the nest boxes are.
They will get them to the boxes. New layers can get surprised by the egg coming and they don't make it back in time.

So, all my hens have been laying for 2 weeks now. This morning is the 1st time I've opened their run so they can free range B4 they've laid. Fingers crossed they go back to the coop to lay!!!

That is adorable! Congratulations!

I was wondering what the squatting meant, so this is a sign of them getting ready to lay? I read that if they are late layers they will lay longer then most hens, if so this could be a blessing in disguise for you.

Nibbles laid her first egg today!!! She is a 22 week RIR (PR). I thought Peep would lay first (if Peep is in fact a hen) and I am REALLY surprised that Nibbles laid. She hasn't been singing the egg song (although I did hear someone make an awful loud racket this morning just as I was running off to work) or squatting. Although over the last couple days her comb and WATTLES have started growing and getting darker. I think she was holding out so Peep wouldn't get the credit. Nibbles and Peep haven't been separated since I got them 20 weeks ago. But I'm trying to make Peep like my new hen Frances so I removed Peep (who is very mean to Frances) and left Frances with Nibbles so they could become friends. I was hoping if Frances had an ally maybe Peep would be nicer to her. Anyway, I moved Peep in to the cage I've had Frances in and put Frances in with Nibbles. When I got home from work I went to see if Frances and laid and there were TWO eggs sitting there! They were right next to each other. At first I was thinking Frances laid two eggs, but I didn't think that was possible. Then it dawned on me, Nibbles laid an egg!!!

It's so little and cute! I was so excited I picked her up and gave her a great big hug.

I'm not sure she was as excited about the hug as I was about the egg.
