First Egg Countdown

This is midnight we are thinking she will be the first to lay since her comb and waddles are way bigger then the rest of em.

What a beautiful hen. She is looking mature and I'm sure an egg is just around the corner :) Watch for the squatting. For me, I bent down and reached my hand out for to pet and my hen(s) squatted as if for a roo. I saw eggs within the same week - some say they will lay within two weeks of this behavior. Can't wait to see your first egg photo :)

Hurray, we have our first egg!!! Came home from work and there it was, sitting on top of the poop board, of all places. It has a crushed end, but I'm pretty excited all the same. I think she laid it while roosting.....silly thing. They don't like our laying quarters so will have to go back to the drawing board. In the meantime I am ecstatic!!! Now for the other 3...in time

I have two EEs, one has been laying for over 3 weeks, the other has yet to start. They are both 27 weeks now, and although I bought them both at the same time (2 days old) they look and act so different! Just this week Sunshine sort of started bowing. She seems to be filling out a bit more and her tail is standing up more. Chestnut on the other hand, looks like a real hen, big fluffy bum, full breast and full tail. Do you think I might get an egg soon? And how could two birds of the very same age develop so differently? (Chestnut is on the left, Sunshine is on the right)

Roheryn, it is likely that your two EE's have fathers of different breeds. EE's are a cross between an Americauna hen and any other rooster. My two EE's look a lot different, too. Don't worry, they will both lay. One of mine lays a light blue egg, and the other one lays a green egg!

Ok seems like people still are not differentiating between different sounds and still calling two different songs an egg song.

6. Broody hen's growl: Somewhat like the growl from the rooster but she repeats if the threat continues.

So, if my white leghorn is screeching like this in the nest box, is it likely she has gone broody? I thought she just had a unique egg song :)
She lets me take the egg every time without pecking me. But it might be really nice to have a broody.

Here is one of my 23 week old RIRs. My Reds are showing all the signs of being ready to lay and I'm getting excited. I'm thinking any day now.

Here is a picture of my Ameraucanas (Eastereggers?) who are just turning 19 weeks old. I figure they still have a long way to go before they are ready.

I can't wait to find those first eggs!

Leghorns rarely go broody. Its possible that some hens are just protective when laying eggs and make those calls. Its not her egg song though!

One of my EE girls started laying at around 21 weeks so don't count them out yet.
