We have now gotten our 3rd egg in 3 days! Yay! They are very small and not fertile though. Hoping for bigger fertile eggs to come. We would like to start hatching babies soon.
Our chicken math went like this:
Build a coop suitable for 6 to 8 chickens.
Order six mail order chicks. One chick is DOA. Very sad. So, we check around and discover a feed store with a shipment of chicks expected the next day.
Pick up 4 chicks at feed store.
When buying a chick feeder the next day discover the feed store has a NEW shipment of chicks, this time the very same breed that the DOA chick had been. Buy 3.
In 24 hours 6 chicks morphed into 13.
Sadly, we lost one of our full size Brahmas to a moment of inattention, when our elderly lab got out the back door.... And we lost our GORGEOUS white cochin roo to a sudden death overnight. No predator or anything, he was fine when he went in the coop in the evening and stiff on the floor in the morning. Not a mark on him.
So, subtract 2, and we still have 7 more chickens than we had originally planned for.
Are you coming to my house while I'm at work or do you have ESP? Lol this egg was just a bit bigger and was slightly skinnier at top (as if it stayed in the canal a little longer than it was supposed to - like a new born baby's head). My ten year old even stated that it looked a little different than the others (maybe he's reading this forum too lol) it was also laid in the nesting box rather than on the ground like the last three. I have noticed that one of the girls with the reddest and largest comb after the one I'm sure is laying has started behavior similar to what the one who is laying such as going off by herself without the rest of the flock and just generally different behavior that's unusual for her. I'll keep everyone updated as to their progress. Thank you all again.
So I took off work today because I needed to get some work done on my car amongst a laundry list of others. My barred rock who I suspect has been laying fussed at the recently added baby chicks then hopped in the nest box. She isn't making any noise but hopefully there will be an egg soon. Fingers crossed. It will be the first time I have ever witnessed such a thing.
I was sitting in our living room and heard something like bah BAP bah BAAP bah BAAPP bah BAP! coming from the yard.
EGG SONG! I yelled, and I grabbed my cane and a little cracked corn, and rushed out to see. I looked in the nest box, and nothing.
Looked around the yard.... nothing... thought maybe the coop? Not inside the egg box there either.
And then I thought hey, maybe that plastic bin that we've used to store ashes for the dust baths?
BINGO! Our first egg!
Still VERY warm, too. So I gave the girls all a nice bit of cracked corn and ran inside to show my husband and my partner.
