First Egg Countdown

I

It's that time of year they slow down. They need about 14 hours of light to lay. My girls slowed WAAAY down, so I added light and they're all producing again. We have a large flock so feeding a few dozen non-laying chickens wasn't really an option for us.
I knew there was something up. She finally laid the eggs she was holding-YES 3 in less than 24 hrs. All 3 were laid not in the nest but in a separate nest she made on the coop floor, One was laid at 5:30 PM the day before yesterday, one around 7:30 in the morning yesterday and then the 3rd one around 4:00 PM yesterday. So far no egg today from her so she is probably going to take a break. I don't know what caused the holding. May be she just did not like the nesting area, it was probably too dark for her. I guess chicken have their own choices too

Finally my last pullet that was holding out, Scarlet-a Golden Laced Wyandotte, laid her first egg today. It was almost white though. She is a strange creature however, never sang any songs whatsoever, no squatting seen in the past weeks, just very quiet and sneaky. The only sound I have ever heard from her is when she screams at being beaten up by older girls. I really think she is either deaf or mute.
Anyone else has a chicken like that?

I've had some that would never squat for me.

Congrats on the egg.

I have a new batch of girls that don't squat for me. I had a a bunch of girls who all squated for me until we our roosters came of age. Now, most of them will let us pet and pick them up but usually not a whole lot of actual squatting. Need roosters for hawks so its a trade I guess. Also, there are a few girls that have started laying for us the last few weeks that I didn't even think were close. Combs and wattles were just coming in (Brahmas) and had never never squated that I saw. Tricky little creatures. Lol

Congrats everyone on their eggs! Very fun reading everybody's adventures.

We are new to this also, got our first eggs back in June and we have been reliably getting 33-35 eggs/week from 7 girls since mid-July. So fun.

I just read thru 150 posts from the last 2 weeks or so, and as I sit here I hear multiple egg songs and it's not quite 7 AM and still dark. Boy the girls are busy!

For all you who are waiting, be patient the eggs will come.

For all those free-loading chickens, you better start laying lol!

The Great Unlayers. Decided to give them crushed eggshell just in case-they DEVOURED it. They havent shut up in three days. Alice squats. Someone keeps making nests with our fake eggs.

The bone beneath the vent is SLOOOOOWLY seperating.

On a related note, my papaw gave me three eggs a friend of memaws gave her. I dont know what she feeds, but those were some pitiful eggs. The yolks were SO PALE and busted the second they hit the pan. The whites could have been water they were so thin. And the shell? Like paper. I couldnt bring myself to eat them-they barely scrambled! The chickens enjoyed them though.

That black one is really beautiful, what breed is she?

I have a BSL who started laying about a month ago but has stopped the last 2 weeks. Should I be worried. She seems fine.
