All right! Nice egg, too.
I have been waiting for EVER for my7-month pullets to start laying, and now we got 7-8 hour days, so I decided they would wait awhile to start laying, until feb. or so, but then, sunday, I got a wonderful surprise! She ( I think its one of my australorps) has laid for three days now, on the roost. This is one amazing gal, because today it was about 20 degrees BELOW zero, F. Still a nice egg, though. I do hope she will start using the nest soon. What about my other 15 "hens" why aren't they laying? Heres a pic of the first egg, compared to a large store egg. the next two were about the same.

It's beautiful. What a treasure from your Great Grandmother.Regarding the egg plate, It was painted in Florida by my Great grandmother years ago and given to me by my grandmother. I love it.

Stayed home sick today and I thought one of my chickens was being killed...
Ran out, no predators (cats).
Couple of hours later I decided to let them free range for the rest of the day and by habit I checked the nest box. Perfectly shaped blue egg sitting next to a golf ball!
Had a crack on the top but not anything that will keep me from using it. Just need to add a little more bedding.
I assumed the first egg wouldn't be until spring considering two were molting when I got them and the other two are too young.
Woohoo!
