First Egg Countdown

How is she acting?
Does she seem frantic or in pain, is she eating and drinking okay?

Hopefully, it's just the weather.
If she seems in distress though, you may want to try the warm bath thing. I've also heard cayenne pepper mixed into food helps with laying problems.

Eating drinking fine acting normal runs from me when I try to pet her but she's always done that lol I'm thinking it's just the weather also cause it was really cold then warm/hot then rainy/freezing

She looks fine.

How old is she?
When was the last time she laid?
Any stresses? (predators, did you change something in the coop, add/remove any birds, etc?)

She's about 7 months and it's been about a week nothing's changed just the weather

She's young, no need to worry, it's probably just her body adjusting to laying. They can be really sporadic.

I caught a barnevelders pullet checking out the nest box today. Hopefully soon they will start laying! I sure could use the eggs!

Some beautiful egg pictures on here! Someday, maybe, I will get to post some.

18 weeks, so not sure I can call them freeloaders, yet. The Barred Rock's comb gets redder every day. They're butts have gotten big and fluffy. I think all of this is good signs, but no eggs, yet.

I got a second egg and it too was in the nest box! Here it is next to a large egg from the store.

How do you determine who laid what (without food coloring their butts or anything). I have a SLW close to lay (she squatting). The first egg was a little bit longer than this one. This second egg has a very classic shape. Can they have some variance in shape on their first few eggs or would it be from a different chicken?
There wasn't much fuss about this one so I'm thinking it's not a first egg from the SLW.

You have to be a chicken nerd and hang out and watch them lay.

Shape usually doesn't change, but occasionally it can happen. Double yolkers almost always have a different shape. My buttercup laid an oblong shaped egg, but sometimes it was what I refer to as a pullet bullet. (really long and narrow)

I think I now know why it has taken so long. My cockerel was stressing them out trying to mount them. They are 32 weeks, I think? Well the girls ganged up on him and beat the living snot out of him the other day. Blood every where. He's ok, a little worse for the wear, but ok and much more docile with them.

Well this morning, I went out to do chores and one was in the nest box, and 4 pullets had Mr Roo surrounded, on the floor, right under the nest she was in, with his head in the corner. Talk about a team effort, for that one egg!!!
