First Egg Countdown

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately two of my girls did get mild frostbite on the tips of their combs. Makes me angry quite honestly. They are more like pets and I've failed them. I've put some heavy duty cream on to help them heal. Just frustrated. Have to think hharder about the rest of the winter.hope everyone else fairs well this winter.
Frostbite happens, it's hard to prevent. Don't beat yourself up, they will heal. Now I did feel bad when my rooster tore his wattles. He would drink water and his wattles would get wet. Then he'd go eat and his wattles stuck to the metal feeder. I now switch to plastic feeders for winter.

Finally got one of our EE lay her first egg. On the coldest day of year. Wow.
Congrats!

Interesting.

I never would have thought of this.

I might have to paint the rim on the feeder or slice a thin plastic tube and put over the rim?

Thanks for the info.

Is there a thread with little dos and don'ts like this that most people would never think about until it happens?

Still "patiently" waiting for my girls to lay. Really it's not that big of a deal to me, I'm having so much fun with them anyway, I think I'll probably be shocked when I do see an egg because the time is just flying by! They are almost 19 weeks right now, and I wonder where all the time went since they were chicks!

I am loving this thread, it's really cool to see all the first egg love!

Quote: I never thought of it either, but it did make me think of "A Christmas Story". I'm not aware of a do's and don't thread, pretty much it's trial and error. I've made a lot of mistakes in the almost 5 years I've had poultry. Some were very hard lessons with predators. You learn from each one and improve to make your flocks lives better.

Won't be long now!

My girls will be 21 weeks Monday...waiting...waiting...

All 3 girls and roo has successfully recovered from sour crop! I thought we were gonna loose the BR and the roo. But I guess I'm a good chicken nurse as well as people nurse (although I prefer chickens) ;-P

Glad they are doing well! Good job taking care of them. I hope they reward you soon with eggs.

Congratulations on all the first eggs!

Still waiting for my first egg. The girls are 24 weeks. I am so impatient. Each morning, I check the coop, just in case. It's a weekly cycle of

I am having fun with them, though. And, it's got to be soon. The solstice is passed. The molting is passed. Hecate's comb and wattles are so red it's startling when I see her out the window. Hattie is insane. I have no hope of eggs from her. Barely a hint of pink in her comb. I sometimes wonder if she is eating Hecate's eggs, but there would be some shell or something left, I believe.

C'mon, girls, give me eggs!!!
