First Egg Countdown

Our girls are only 18 weeks, but it seems like we've had them FOREVER!!! We are anxiously awaiting eggs. Can hardly contain our excitement over those soon to be beautiful dark brown eggs!!!!

Hi! I'm new to BYC and new to having chickens. We have 18; 8 Araucana/Ameraucana (sp?) (7 pullets, 1 roo,) 5 Light Brahmas, 2 Silver-Laced Wyandottes, 2 Isa Browns and 1 Black Sex-Link. They range in age from 6 to 8 weeks old. My roo was an oops in the pullets, and it was all too entertaining to listen to him try to find his voice. I know they should come off chick starter at 22 weeks; they have an unlimited supply and they are also free-ranging. When should I start to see eggs and/or make nest boxes?

Generally speaking, in the 20 -32 week range. It depends a lot on breed and whether they are slow to mature. It also depends on your stock - hatchery birds will generally start laying sooner than breeder quality birds. Some hybrids (like sex links) will start a tad earlier.

Hello all. I got my first egg today and was so excited I just had to share my news! I got my first two 'point of lay' fancy bantams in January and have not had a single egg out of them (point of lay my arse). About 06 weeks ago I gave up and brought a plain brown hen. This morning I got my first egg! It's quite small and could be bantam shaped - however the laying date matched up with when the brown chicken seller said it would be.

My Egg!

Brown Chicken.

Other chickens >_<

I also have some quails (4) who lay about once a week. Tonight I'm making a quiche with all my saved (6) quail eggs and my first chicken egg. :)

Yay! Congratulations!!! You have some very sweet looking chickens. :)

Honestly, I am getting 10-12 eggs a day and it's still a miracle to me. I'm still loving it as much as I did when I got the first egg from one of our girls (well, that one was very special, but you know what I mean).

Congrats on the egg!

I love the big kitty in your avatar!

I've had chickens for 5 1/2 years now, and the daily egg collection still is exciting. It never gets old.

Had one of my hens do the "squat" when I reached down to give her a pet, I sure hope that means I will see an egg soon!

Lol! Probably very soon, isn't it exciting? My pullets still only squat for the roo and they've been laying for several months. They don't count me as an authority figure, I'm just the treat dispenser. :)
