Sure! I never turn down a chance to show off my babies! Here is the entire flock of older girls (minus my two baby cochins right now).

The silver girl in the background is Iti, my EE. The back left redhead is Carmelita. The back middle girl is Ophelia. The front left blondie is Darla. And the front right is the girl of the hour, Drusilla!

I expect Carmelita to be our next layer. Drusilla is alpha chicken, and has the biggest butt, but she seems to be *ahem* behind on development. Ophelia and Iti are 3 weeks behind the others, which puts them at 15 weeks. Everyone else is at 18 as of today.

Thanks for your support everyone! It's really fun to share the joy of the first egg with you!

I have been reading this thread with much interest and anticipation of my first egg. My girls will be 17 weeks old this coming weekend. Yesterday, I heard the egg song! I was sitting outside visiting with some of the free range chickens, when I heard a commotion from inside of the coop. At first, I ignored it, thinking that they were jostling for position or something but this kept going on and on. Then it hit me!

It was the egg song!

I went running in to see who it was, but of course, they all (there were 5 in there) stared at me with blank expressions. I looked for an egg, but couldn't find one.

Last night I was reading here on BYC and someone said that chickens will "practice" their song. Come on! Quit practicing and start laying!

What exactly is the "egg song"?

I wanted to pick up Scratch and she squatted! She was all stiff with her wings slightly out to her sides. I gave her a pat on the back..I hope it's not a fluke. I think I'll keep telling her that I've been wanting fried chicken.

It's the sound people associate with chickens. Look for it on You Tube.

Strangely, chickens sing the egg song for other reasons, like predators and etc.
