Happy, happy! Joy, joy! My blue Ameraucana of 22 weeks laid her first robin's-egg blue egg! I wasn't even looking, either as other chickens waited until they were 8 or nine months old to lay. She didn't have a nest box and I feel bad. Little chickie laid it in roost box....Oh how I have waited for the day I would get a blue egg!

I got my first egg at 19 weeks. The Leghorns I think. Not sure since I have 24 chickens. 5 today, not quite a week later.

I got my first egg a few weeks ago, but was too busy to post about it or take pictures. That first day I got one egg from one of my Barred Rocks, one egg from my lemon orph (weird they laid on the same day- the orph is 3 weeks older), and one from my red frizzle bantam.

Yesterday one of my EE's laid her first egg, so it was my first blue egg. And yesterday was also the first day I got 4 eggs, and the first day I got a "large" egg (2 oz is large, right?). The EE was funny to watch, as she put more effort into "nesting" than I had seen from the others, like collecting feathers, etc. It was also pretty exciting that she laid as I wasn't sure that she was really a "she."

I love gathering eggs- it's like Christmas every day! Even after two weeks it's still exciting! So far the only problem we've had is the lemon orph laying one super soft shelled egg and one shell-less egg (which actually was her first egg, I just didn't realize what it was when I saw it until two days later when I found the first real eggs). Since then I've been giving them oyster shell AND ground up egg shells, and their shells are awesome... but I'm not sure if the Orph has laid much. She laid two that I was sure were hers, both thinish or bumpy eggs, but it's been at least a week since I've found an egg that is obviously hers (hers are lighter than the rock's eggs). Hmm... should I worry?

ETA: Oh, and they were 22 weeks and 19 weeks when they first laid... really kept me waiting!

The bumpy eggs are usually just excess calcium deposited on the shell.

Wow! So many people getting first eggs! Grats to everyone and thanks for sharing first egg joy with us! I have no idea why, but the excitement of seeing the first egg never gets old

Wow, I'm jealous! My girls are only 14-15 weeks old so we have a bit of time to wait still. But am thinking it's time to get those nest boxes in!
