First Egg Countdown

I am still waiting too. I am beginning to think that it might be next spring before I get any eggs from my girls. If so I will be getting a bunch all at one time. I have 2 that are RIR? that are over 20 weeks? 2 that are 19 weeks and BR mutt. 5 or 6 that are all mutts of different breeds and are 17 weeks and then 2 to 4 that are 13 weeks. Everything else that I have is a flipping rooster, due to go to freezer camp, 3 today.

So I have an egg rant LOL

The powers that be have been teaching me patience--a lesson that I have not been the best student of but alas, I've waited and waited and WAITED for my girls to lay (with limited complaining LOL).

Out of 20 girls that are nearly 28 weeks old, only 2 have actually started laying, 1 EE and 1 BCM. I don't get it. They were hatched in early March, I live in beautiful, sunny California and they are on high-quality diets. What gives?!?

Some look like they are ready to start laying but others still look like they are years away from it...

I've never had birds take this long to lay.

Weewhhh---that felt good getting it off my chest.

There were some threads about late laying last year. Maybe it has something to do with the place you got them?

Sorry to hear it is taking so long to get eggs

One egg Friday afternoon and One egg this morning 6 Buffs and 3 SLW ladies. Both eggs look different....do they usually take days to lay a second egg? All 9 were born on the same day. Kinda like a kid talking you wait and wait then one day they talk and then you wish...well you know. I bet once all 9 start laying I'll get 18 eggs a day and then i'll be saying slow down girls lol. D.O.B. 4-19-2011 so around 23 weeks i guess before first egg....now the question..Which one done it.... lol

Hi dawj,

Yes, they are hit and miss for awhile. They are supposed to have big changes after the first molt too. Mine are 28 and 22 weeks old and the 22 week old RIR's are still working on being regular. The eggs are getting bigger too. The RIR eggs are about 1.5 ounces and the Black Australorp eggs are about 2 to 2.1 ounces. Oh,the RIR pullets started laying from 18 to 19 weeks old. The BA's waited until they were closer to 24 weeks old to start.

congratulations

As Happy Chooks told me, the more they wait, the healthier it is for them - or something to that effect. Sometimes I think mine are too happy to be bothered laying an egg
